Proportional Representation

• Best for Britain campaigns for Proportional Representation as a way to restore trust and accountability to our political system, by expanding fair votes to all and boosting democratic equality.
• With PR, the electorate could vote for who they want rather than having to vote tactically for a “least worst option”
• The UK already uses PR for elections in Wales, Scotland and Northern Ireland. We previously used it to elect metro mayors in England before the Conservatives changed the rules through the Elections Act

• Constituency link: Contrary to what some people argue, a PR system doesn’t have to break the link between MP and constituency. You can have types of PR that maintain constituency connections. For example, members of the Irish parliament represent specific parts of Ireland.
• Extremism: Some argue that PR gives more extreme parties a voice, however we see time and again that extreme parties are kept in check in PR systems where they are forced to work with more moderate elements. In our system, extreme parties can exert undue pressure and even completely hijack mainstream parties who can hold all of the power.
• What kind of PR would you advocate: Any form of PR would be better than our current system. Step one is electing a government that agrees with doing away with it.
