Campaigners have welcomed the Prime Minister’s acknowledgement of the need for closer ties with Europe, but stress that EU membership is the only option that “can begin to repair the damage” caused by Brexit.

Speaking on The Rest Is Politics podcast, Andy Burnham said he would argue for “closer integration” at this year’s UK-EU summit.
The Prime Minister also added that “Brexit has done more harm than good”.
Naomi Smith, Chief Executive of Best for Britain, said:
“From hammering the UK economically, hitting families up and down the country in their pockets and at the supermarket checkout, to isolating us from our allies on issues like defence, security and immigration, it’s truly welcome to see a UK Prime Minister acknowledge the wrecking ball that was Brexit and the need for far closer ties with Europe, as our partners in France, Germany and Spain extend their open arms.
“What is now more vital than ever is that pro-Europeans make it unmistakably clear: there is only one option on the table that could begin to repair that damage, and it’s restoring our EU membership and putting the UK back at the heart of Europe, as soon as possible.”
