Campaigners are urging Labour to immediately review political funding regulations in the wake of Reform UK receiving a total of £72m via two donations from crypto billionaires within 24 hours.
It was reported on Friday evening that Nigel Farage’s party had received a £36m donation from businessman Ben Delo, who was pardoned by US President Donald Trump last year after a conviction for violating the US Bank Secrecy Act.
On Saturday, it emerged Reform UK had received a second £36m from the Thai-based businessman Christopher Harborne, already the party’s biggest donor, which he said was intended to help Reform prepare for government.
Cary Mitchell, Best for Britain’s Executive Director of Operations and Strategy, said:
“These record-breaking sums, which total more than seven times the largest amount ever given to a political party in our history, should spark huge concern among everyone seeking to protect the UK’s politics from being bought and sold to the highest bidder.
“Labour had the opportunity to act more quickly to tighten funding rules and preserve our democracy, and Andy Burnham must immediately review political funding regulations given this seismic increase of crypto money flowing into our democracy.”
