The Vatican has confirmed the death of Pope Francis today.
Born Jorge Mario Bergoglio in Argentina, Pope Francis was the first person from South America to lead the Catholic church when he was elected in 2013.
During his papacy, he spoke out repeatedly for the rights of refugees and was very critical of the Trump administration's policy of mass deportations.
Naomi Smith, Chief Executive of Best for Britain said,
"Alongside being the spiritual leader for millions, Pope Francis was a powerful advocate for international law and the rights of people in crisis.
"As the world becomes more dangerous and less kind, these values are more important than ever."
